How To Draw A Female Face 3/4 Angle

example of different head angles

The Basic Forms

To draw the caput from whatsoever bending yous must beginning sympathize its basic structure. Look past all the distracting details and visualize the underlying forms. This ability to simplify can be applied to the features of the face, just when starting the cartoon you could look fifty-fifty further. Ignore even the features and simplify to the near bones form of the head. I use a method taught by Andrew Loomis in his volume, "Drawing the Head & Hands".

The caput deconstructed into its bones forms, is a sphere as the cranium and a block every bit the jaw and cheek bones.

basic forms

A Sphere as the Attic

The sides of the caput are apartment, so we can slice off a piece from both sides of the brawl. From contour, this plane will exist a perfect circle, but when drawing it from any other angle, information technology will appear to be an oval because of perspective. Split this oval into quadrants. The vertical line represents the starting time of the jaw. The horizontal line represents the forehead line. The top and bottom of the oval help you lot detect the pilus line and the bottom of the nose.

A Block as the Jaw and Cheek Basic

Attach the shape of the jaw. The top will start at the brow line and the back volition start at the center of the oval. This is a three-D volume with a front end plane, side planes, and bottom airplane (bottom plane is seen from some angles).

Constructing From Whatever Angle

Step 1 – Determine the angle of the ball

The angle of the head is established at the very beginning of the cartoon with the ball. All three axes must exist addressed:

X Centrality - The upward and down tilt is established past the angles of the horizontal and vertical lines in the oval. As well, on extreme up tilts and down tilts, the thirds will be foreshortened because of perspective.

rotate x

Y Centrality - The direction the head is turning (left or right) is established by the width of the oval. As the caput turns towards y'all, you tin can see more of the front of the face and less of the side, then the oval representing the side will get narrower. Similarly, when the head turns away from you lot, more than of the side plane is revealed and the oval will appear wider.

rotate y

Z Centrality - The twist is established past the bending of the center line, the angle of the oval and the placement of the oval on the ball.

rotate z

Step 2 – Find the thirds

Afterward establishing the angle of the ball, divide the face into thirds. The altitude between the hairline and brow-line should be the aforementioned as the altitude between the brow-line and bottom of the olfactory organ. Add together that same distance to find the chin. Notice how the  hairline and nose-line align with the top and bottom bottom of the oval when wrapped effectually the face. Imagine the head as a box. The thirds must be wrapped around the side aeroplane and front plane.

Step 3 – Add together the jaw

A mutual mistake at this point is to make the jaw too long in comparison to the brawl. Make sure to measure out your thirds correctly and that they relate correctly to the ball. Detect how the shape of the jaw changes from various angles.

Step 4 – Add together the features

With this bones structure properly established, it becomes much easier to add the features in the right identify. Bank check dorsum for more information about specific features in a later on post.

Practice inventing the head from all possible angles. Get a sketchbook and fill an unabridged page with little heads. When drawing without reference photos, yous quickly realize where your weaknesses are considering yous can't rely on copying. You can only work with what yous know.
